Here’s a little taste of our crazy blowout shelf – all items pictured are 50-70% off!  There are some really nice pieces in here, just looking for the right vehicle to make it happen!

Eclipse supplied the headunit with iPod and Blutooth connectivity, Infinity Kappa Perfect speakers light up the doors, and JL did the rest with a 13w6 and an HD900/5.  This is a very clean, functional system.

The enclosure really is the show piece of this build.  We started with a fiberglass base to conform to all the weird shapes of the factory sheet metal, taking care to protect the vehicle from any stray resin drips.  With the base down we mocked up the sub with an MDF skeleton.  The port, amp tub, and sub all had to be mocked up to fit in the space.  The depth of the sub required the whole works to stick out about 3 inches past the trim.  The 13w6 is a beast!

Once it was all blocked out flat we started the trim pieces to hid the amp connections and break up the finish with some added texture.

Finally the trim.  The box was primed with a urethane primer to seal it up the substrated, allow for a little sanding of pinholes, and provide a nice base for the paint work.  We used factory matching trim paint from Martin Senour and wrapped the inserts with black microfiber.   You may notice a little embossed Bobwires logo in there….  A little bit of branding never hurt nobody, right?

The trunk got some custom work to step up the look of this smooth ride. We chose to keep the trunk wall nice and simple to keep as much usable trunk space as possible without using any fiberglass.  The aluminum Buick logo sets off the build, revealing the Amps through some perforated aluminum.

The speakers went to the factoty locations with minimal sound deadener for this already quiet car.  The Sirius Radio was tied into the factory antenna.  Custom RCA cables ensure a cable of the exact length required, solid connections, clean signal, and no noise issues.

The Sub box was straight forward MDF construction with a little extra deadener put in for whatever stiffening it could provide.  Infinity Kappa subwoofers excel in small, sealed enclosures.

From there the last stage was the Aluminum work.  Starting with a rough sketch for the trunk panel shape, and a good look at the Buick logo, we laid out the trim panel.  The template was made for the complete Buick logo with MDF, and after a few hours behind the router we got the shape milled up from the aluminum sheet stock.  More router time got the edges beveled, a buffing wheel polished the edges, and some sand paper and a jig got the faces brushed.  Overall the varying textures and angles make for an interesting piece.  The mesh was painted and glued in place.  The Amps remain serviceable thanks to a slew of rare earth magnets holding the trim together and hiding the fasteners..  Four large screws allow the entire beauty panel to be removed.

The next phase consisted of new kick panels for the aforementioned Q’s and some customized door panels to house Hybrid Audio Legatia L8′s – some serious midbass drivers!

The before picture here shows the  factory system….. yikes.   Sirius, GPS, an iPod connection through USB, and a backup camera will now be built-in to the Eclipse AVN726

The options for mounting a double din head unit in this vehicle were really lame, so we chose to fabricate our own.  ABS plastic was used for the brackets to mount the deck and make the trim.  Finally plastic filler was used to smooth out the finish and blend it into the factory lines.  Texture coat and some flat black paint brought the finish very close to the surrounding trim.

Custom RCA cables keeps the cables the right length, and ensures a solid signal quality with zero noise from surrounding electronics.  A Backup camera was molded into the rear hatch all stealth-like.  This angle provided the best view of the corners of the bumper.  The HD Amplifier from JL Audio has 5 channels to power all the speakers and the subwoofer in one small chassis.  Steel brackets were fabricated to mount it behind the trim where the factory amp and cd player went.

BMW decided to use a pair of tiny “subwoofers” in a plastic box, completely stuffed behind a piece of trim with no vent…. Not happening.  We stuffed an Orion XTR10 in the same space by simply modifying the baffle to fit the larger sub, and reinforcing the entire enclosure with a couple layers of fiberglass.  Then a little custom work allowed the sound to enter the passenger space.  Smoked Acrylic and Aluminum made up the perimeter, with perforated aluminum for a grille.
